Nonprofit Membership

The nonprofit membership is for organizations serving individuals between the age of 13 and 24. Generation Innovation supports your youth in taking control over their outcomes. Furthermore, nonprofit members are community based organizations, foundations, religious organizations, and other IRS approved entities. We work with you and your youth to design programs to best support their needs! Below you will find information about the nonprofit application.

Eligibility

Firstly, nonprofit membership is open to everyone who wishes to apply. However, there are criteria you must meet for approval of your membership. Also, you must maintain alignment with the criteria to maintain membership. Additionally, we provide progress reports at the end of each year to let you know how your nonprofit is doing. New nonprofits begin at Rank C and can move up to Rank A with good progress or down to letter E with poor performance. Nonetheless, we will always work with you and your youth to develop solutions to issues that may occur.

Age Requirements

Most importantly, memberships are available to any nonprofit with youth of good character, between the ages of thirteen (13) and twenty-four (24). Furthermore, the definition of good character is having integrity, honesty, accountability, and self-control.

Location

Secondly, your nonprofit must reside in a state that Generation Innovation operates. A list of our locations can be found at https://geninnovation.net/locations. However, you do not need to reside in a county or city we serve. Nonetheless, if you want us to bring our programs to your state then contact us so we are aware of your interest.

Socioeconomic Status

Also, membership is available to candidate nonprofits regardless of your youth members’ socioeconomic status. Furthermore, we welcome nonprofits serving youth from all levels of the income spectrum. Additionally, your nonprofit may apply for membership regardless of your youth members’ ethnic and national status.

Membership Fee

Application for membership is free of charge. However, all members need to make full payment on their membership promptly each year. You may increase or decrease your membership status based on the membership fees outlined below. Also, your youth must complete any scholarship and financial aid requests promptly to be eligible for a fee reduction.

Entrepreneurship/Social Innovation

Your youth members should have, at least, an interest in exploring and learning about entrepreneurship and social innovation. However, they do not need to start a business or take classes in entrepreneurship. Furthermore, most programs will revolve around looking at career development through an entrepreneurial and innovative lens.

Career Development

Your youth will need to participate in at least one job shadow or internship opportunity in their first 3 years of membership. Either they or Generation Innovation can select their career opportunity, the choice is theirs. Nonetheless, it should be in a topic area they’re interested in learning more about. Also, we will support them throughout the entire process but want them to experience different career options early.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Your youth do not need a specific GPA to participate. Also, we strongly encourage you to not exclude youth based on GPA. Furthermore, it has been proven that relevant education keeps youth more engaged in programs. Nonetheless, you may choose to exclude youth based on GPA. However, nonprofits that utilize GPA as a gatekeeper to participation will remain at Rank C until the policy is changed.

Youth Leadership

Firstly, at all times your youth members are in the driver seat of the program. However, your nonprofit’s staff and your assigned resource coordinator will develop the sandbox for your youth to play in. Generation Innovation has guidelines for bare minimum requirements. However, you will have the flexibility to adjust to meet your nonprofit’s requirements. With that being said member nonprofits should have a willingness to think innovatively about serving the youth and allow youth to take lead on activities.

Minimum Youth Members

Most importantly, we do have minimum requirements for the number of youth members you need to start. You need to have at least 10 individuals willing to participate in order to apply for membership. Furthermore, if you only have 10 individuals then they will take on the youth officer roles for the first year. However, if you have more than 10 individuals then elections or another method may be chosen to select officers.

Ranking

Lastly, our ranking system provides you with greater access to resources. However, it is important to note that all new members begin at Rank C. Also, members not meeting expectations or the jointly created improvement plan will be moved to Rank E. Furthermore, Rank A members gain access to sponsors for programming, special event access, and much more.

Staff & Board of Directors

Lastly, we do have policies to ensure representation at all levels of the organizations we work with. Your nonprofit’s board of directors and/or staff need to be reflective of the youth population you serve. Furthermore, we encourage you to read “Nonprofits & Diversity: Why a Lack of Diversity Can Have a Negative Impact” by Nick Price for more insight into our reasoning.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Scholarships and financial aid are applied to your members’ participation in Generation Innovation programs. Also, financial aid is applied to your annual membership fee only if your youth members update your information each year. However, scholarships are applied to your annual membership fee without needing to update. Furthermore, your youth gain access to scholarship funds by completing their Member Profile. Access to financial aid is provided for the upcoming fall when they complete their Family Financial Report (FFR) by March 30 of each year. Nonetheless, we have outlined estimates on how it may impact your participation. Lastly, enter your estimates into our Aid Calculator below to receive an estimate.

Family Financial Report (FFR)

The Family Financial Report (FFR) determines your need-based aid for membership. Furthermore, the document uses multiple factors aside from income level. However, you can see fee estimates based on income brackets below.
